Indiscriminate and uncontrolled discharge of industrial effluents into the environment has become
an issue of major concern worldwide. Paper industry is one of the most water and energy consuming
industries in the world. Disposal strategy of solid wastes generated paper industry is varied and it depends on
the country and the regulations promulgated. In this study, Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain MK1 was isolated
from paper mill effluent collected from Erode district, Tamil Nadu, India and identified on the basis of morphological,
cultural, biochemical characteristics and 16S rRNA analysis. Physico - chemical variance in remediated
paper mill effluents by free and immobilized cells of Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain MK1 were analyzed.
Results showed that the effluent color was changed from black to colorless in remediated sample. Better
results were observed in effluent sample remediated with immobilized cells rather than free cells. Further
studies are required to understand the principle mechanism and behavior of this strain in bioremediation
process.
